Adjusting Clip on Earrings

Many women prefer clip on earrings because they are far less troublesome that their pierced earring contemporaries. Firstly, you needn't get your ears pierced and that means that you've no risk of infections. You're also safer with them because if a clip on earring gets snagged it simply falls off. A pierced earring that's snagged pulls at the ear and in worst cases can damage it. Yet there is one single complaint I hear time and time again about clip on earrings, and being that it's something that is very easily fixed, I feel I should tell you about it.

The biggest complaint against clip on earrings is that they pinch. By that I mean the fastening on the clip on earring is so tight that after a while wearing them becomes uncomfortable and the ear lobe sore. Perhaps it's because pierced earrings have been so popular for the last few decades that less people today know that clip on earrings are actually very easy to adjust. Let me teach you how.

The majority of clip on earrings use the same type of fastening. There are some exceptions, for example, some hoop clip on earrings, but by and large most clip on earrings will use the type I describe here.

On the reverse side of the clip on fastening you can see that there are three columns. The outer two of these are hinged onto the clip on fastening of the earring whilst the central one isn't. It ends with a little nib over the edge of the clip's hinge. It is this bar that controls how tight the clip is.

Now before you do anything do realise that it is for good reason that most clip on earrings are quite tight when you first get them. Why? Because it's easier to make them looser than it is to tighten them! So when you've read how to loosen them, do so gradually. Loosen them a little bit, and then try them for a while. If they start to pinch again, then loosen them just a little bit more.

In order to loosen pinching clip on earrings, get a small philips screwdriver or a butter knife. A screwdriver is better since it'll give you more control and you'll be less likely to overly relax the clip on fastening. Gently as you can, lever the screwdriver in behind the central column and the clip on earring's hinge, lifting the central column away from the hinge.

And that's it! It's really that easy.

As I said earlier, go steady, adjusting just a little at a time till it's right. These days, clip on earrings are available in styles that rival their pierced counterparts. Whether you like dainty, petite little clip on earrings, glamorous chandelier clip on earrings or bohemian and ethnic clip on earrings, there are plenty of styles to choose from. And now you know how to adjust a clip on earring to fit, wearing earrings has never been so pain free!
